High dynamics and high precision DIY active loudspeaker project

Simon has had the possibility on several occasions to hear the Son XL constructed by Dieter Achenbach. Simon is very impressed with its sonic performance and when compared to other DIY kits this stands out according to Simon. The DIY kit from Achenbach Akustik includes the excellent air motion transformer horn driver Beyma TPL-150H and two pcs 10” PHL E25-3020 bass / mid range drivers. Simon has been more and more convinced of the qualities of the Beyma and PHL drivers.

Simon has chosen a little different and enhance version compared to the original Son XL. He will still use the Beyma TPL-150H, but the mid range will be reduced to 2 x 8” PHL E20-2460 drivers and to extend the low frequency bandwidth Simon will add 2 x 15” BMS woofers model 15N850. This combination will definitely be a potent loudspeaker in terms of dynamic range – it will be able to produce realistic live sound !

You can read more on Simon’s project in the German Hi-Fi forum.

Loudspeaker boxes in progress in the workshop

It's always nice to see ones project and imagine the final result
Do you se the final result ?

The Ground Sound DCN23kit unpacked
The power will Hifi Akademie amplifiers

Burn in of the 4 pcs 15" woofers - this is a rather smart "installation"
The burn-in of the drivers probably out of phase, low frequency and low power

Is the project finished ? - Well - I don't know - It probably is !
